Dr. Paula Kahumbu is the CEO of Kenyan Conservation NGO WildlifeDirect and is a wildlife film producer and presenter for Nat Geo’s landmark series Secrets of the Elephants. She is spearheading the narrative change about conservation in Africa through production of the award winning TV series Wildlife Warriors., and partnered with Disney and USAID to produce Team Sayari on Nat Geo Wild.
The success of WildlifeDirect programs lies in effective outreach to schools in East Africa, and in conservation hubs. She is achieving conservation through behaviour change at all levels of society, from rural communities, to business leaders and political decision makers.
Kahumbu is a Kenyan conservationist with a PhD from Princeton University where she studied Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and conducted her field research on elephants in Kenya
In addition to running WildlifeDirect Paula lectures at Princeton University during an annual field course in Kenya.
She sits on the boards of Nat Geo, WWF Intl, Daughters of the Earth, the Kenya Producers Guild, and Wildstar Academy. is the Rolex/NatGeo Explorer of the year (2021) and is the winner of the Whitley Award 2014, Brand Kenya Ambassador (2013), Presidential award Order of the Grand Warrior (2013), winner of the National Geographic/Howard Buffet Conservation Leader for Africa (2011) and is a National Geographic Emerging Explorer (2011).
Specialties: She is an ecologist, public speaker, presenter, and is also an accomplished writer and she has co-authored a global best selling children’s book on a true story about a hippopotamus and a tortoise called Owen and Mzee: the true story of a remarkable friendship, it’s sequel Owen and Mzee: the language of Friendships, and Looking for Miza a story about an orphaned mountain gorilla in Democratic Republic of Congo in the same series.
Claudia Geib is a science journalist and editor based on Cape Cod in Massachusetts (on Nauset Wampanoag land). She currently freelances for various publications, primarily focusing on marine, environmental, and conservation science, though she describes herself as a “science omnivore.” Her reporting can be found on her home page.
Claudia is also the producer of *Gastropod*, a podcast that explores food through the lens of science and history, offering a delicious look at how food is intertwined with our history, culture, and lives. Additionally, she works as an editor and researcher for science films. From June 2020 to January 2021, she served as Mongabay’s inaugural Sue Palminteri Wildtech Reporting Fellow, focusing on the intersection of conservation and technology.
She holds a background in journalism, environmental science, and marine conservation from Northeastern University, along with a Master’s degree in science writing from MIT. Throughout her career, Claudia has freelanced and worked as staff in the newsrooms of *Futurism*, *Undark Magazine*, and *Nautilus Magazine*. She has also worked with an environmental nonprofit, a national defense laboratory, a seagrass research lab, a coastal cleanup organization, and a green tech accelerator.
