José Luis Martín Vigil was born on October 28, 1919, in Oviedo, into a well-off family. He studied Naval Engineering, Humanities, and Theology after completing high school at the Colegio Superior de los Padres Jesuitas. During the Spanish Civil War, he joined the Nationalist side. In 1953, he was ordained as a priest in the Society of Jesus.
After publishing several books on religious topics, he left the Order in the early 1960s following unprecedented editorial success. He regularly appeared in educational programs, and Televisión Española offered him a segment within one of its classic cultural programs to analyze his life and novels. Shortly after, he had the opportunity to write his own series about the challenges and struggles of the average Spanish family, a kind of docudrama titled “Bajo el mismo techo” (Under the Same Roof).
