Europa, última oportunidad
Description
A call to action for a stronger and more competitive European Union capable of standing up to the United States, China, and India.
“We are fortunate to have been born in Europe at the right time, and we must do everything in our power not to squander the destiny we have inherited. This book is both a tribute to Europe and a call to action to be worthy of its greatness.”
Today, the European Union is navigating a world filled with conflicts of all kinds. How to face these challenges and find the most effective responses is a crucial objective for all its member states and those aspiring to join.
This is the purpose of Europe, Last Chance, in which Enrico Letta presents the conclusions of a nine-month journey across Europe. Throughout this journey, he held over four hundred meetings with a wide range of individuals and organizations from diverse sectors in sixty-five cities.
His findings and proposals led to the Letta Report (2024), commissioned by the Belgian and Spanish Presidencies of the EU Council and endorsed by the entire European Council. This report forms the core of the book’s content.
Clearly outlined in these pages, Letta’s proposals aim to reinvigorate Europe, deepen the single market to accelerate the energy transition, foster innovation and reindustrialization, and strengthen the European bloc in terms of security and defense.
Europe is imperfect, but it is irreplaceable. The time to act is now. This is our last chance. Never before has inertia meant decline as much as it does today.
Enrico Letta, former Prime Minister of Italy (2013-2014), has held key leadership roles in both Italian and European politics. He served as Minister of European Affairs (1998), Minister of Industry (1999-2001), and Member of the European Parliament (2004-2006), actively shaping policies on economic development and European integration. From 2021 to 2023, he led Italy’s Democratic Party (PD) during a crucial period of national and EU governance. Letta is currently President of the Jacques Delors Institute and was appointed rapporteur for the European Union on the Future of the Single Market (2023-2024). He also chairs the Diplomatic Forum of GESDA (Geneva Science Diplomacy Anticipator).
In the academic sphere, Letta holds a PhD in European Law from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa and has an extensive career in higher education. He previously served as Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po and President of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA) in Washington, D.C. In November 2024, he will join IE University as the new Dean of the School of Politics, Economics, and Global Affairs in Segovia, succeeding Manuel Muñiz. His research and leadership continue to influence discussions on European competitiveness, governance, and international affairs.
